I'm no grub guru (it took me a couple of hours to get debian, ubuntu and
win98 booting properly together since I had personally screwed it up),
but try adding
# This entry automatically added for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/hda1
title Windows 95/98/Me
root (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1
to the end of /boot/grub/menu.lst.
This should allow you to boot windows.
(Obviously I'm not using winxp, but the stanza should be the same I
would think)
