I'm not sure what you mean - if you want to save vector graphics, I
don't think you should use pdf because it's not very editable.
As far as I know, the pdf format is an open specification made by Adobe,
and it can be implementing without paying royalties.
However, I don't know why the free (as in free speech, open source) pdf
readers I have seen can not select text by line (instead of by block),
and whether the new pdf format with editable fields is open. Anyone who
know is very welcome to enlighten me.
