No sound when playing .wmv files

In all fairness, I mainly use mplayer.
I try and use the gstreamer based stuff but as you rightly say it
isn't really ready for the primetime as yet.
Let's hope that it receives the development attention it deserves, and
then the Ubuntu folk will be on a winner.
