What do you mean by "ADSL S/W " ?  Hardly an expert, when I had ADSL, I
didn't need to install anything, only to run "pppoefconf" from the
command line, and 10 seconds later internet was working.
When I swtiched to cable, it was using DHCP, even better, absolutely
nothing to do, it all worked automagically.

If really you need to install something i  /usr, type "sudo <your
command to install your programm > " at the command line, to get root
access.
