Come out of suspend in order to hibernate

Is it possible to have an ACPI event fire when the remaining battery
is reduced to a certain level, or does the machine effectively become
braindead until it is taken out of suspension?

My ThinkPad R40 chews battery when suspended meaning that I get about
8-10 hours before it's drained. Hibernation works fine, so I was
hoping I could have the machine un-suspend in order to hibernate
itself.
