Hoary installed 2X - Laptop Display is too small after installation

I have installed Hoary 2 times on on my 5 year old
generic Laptop.

I won't come out of the 800 X 600 display. The video
card runs only at 64 MHZ.

The Machine itself has a 4.0 GB harddrive running a
380 MHZ CPU with 256 MB of RAM. Perhaps the CPU and
harddrive are upgradable but the RAM amount is all the
motherboard can handle.

As this is a generic Laptop I don't know the specs on
the card and don't know how to obtain them in Linux.
If they are needed to resolve this, my only resolution
is to install WindowsME and then install a program
called "Everest" which which will give me the video
specs in a GUI dispaly.

Anyway . . .

Hoary gives me a very small video display.

The display worked excellently when I installed Warty
on this Laptop only a few weeks ago.

I noticed, that unlike Warty, Hoary didn't give me the
chance to choose my video display modes during
installation.

Consequently when Gnome 2.10 is up and running & I
checked for video display modes, all I have is 800 X
600 available.

I have tried to reset the display using the Laptop's
CMOS - and no go.

I have searched through Unbuntu's help forums and
found a suggestion to check /etc/modprobe.d/nvida

I did that 5x (just to make sure I wasn't making a
typo) -- it doesn't exist on this Laptop.

I found another suggestion to run 'videodev'. I don't
what that is - a shell file perhaps? If so where I
find it so I can run it in a Root terminal?

Is it possible to force Warty to get to a boot screen
that will allow me to add display modes?

And maybe this will help ---

my Warty Xorg.0.log contents.

Here it is:

----

I do note that there that a lot of the modes were
marked 'insufficient memory for mode'.

Now, I really don't want hear "Sorry, Pal, you're out
of luck. 'Fraid Warty Ubunutu ain't gonna run right on
your laptop. Try another Distro."

Well, I don't want to. I want to use Ubuntu.

So, if video memory is an issue, maybe Gnome 2.10
isn't ever going to work properly on this ancient
Laptop. So, I would suggest to the development team
that it should really give Ubuntu users the option
during installation of selecting another Windows
Manager such as Fluxbox or Icewm: these ran quite well
for me under Knoppix (which would not, by the way,
load KDE due to video memory issues). I don't want to
use a Live-CD on this Laptop and the Knoppix team
doesn't give access to Root so that it can be
installed to harddrive. What I do I want is for the
O/S and the Windows Manager to run from the hardrive
with video in the fullest display possible (i.e more
that 800 x 600). Ubuntu is the best choice and has the
best potential of all the Distros I seen (and used)
for using Linux on ANY computer.

So, any help that can be given will be appreciated.

Thanks!
Mike
