sound problems after update to Hoary

what's happening when you start the multimedia system selector and
test the default source input?
I get the following error message "Failed to construct test pipeline
for 'ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture'".
But I can start audacity, but recording doesn't record sth :-)
skype doesn't work neither for me because of that.
