Wow, where to begin.  I am having trouble with mplayer and vlc:


mplayer plugin does not work for me in Firefox.
         -> It buffers until it gets to 99% and just hangs there.

mplayer does not launch from the command line:
         -> mplayer: relocation error: /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.0:
undefined symbol: NeAACDecOpen

vlc plugin does not work in Firefox.
         -> no movie ever loads

On a similar note Real Player can't launch.  This is the Linux binary
for RealPlayer that I downloaded from Real's website and installed in
/opt.
         -> typing realplay from the command line simply hangs.

BUT, I can play Rythmbox and listen to music.  
        I can hear system sounds.
