Compiling Ubuntu packages - where to start?

This is in the wiki but

has lots of stuff in it. I also have been starting to read through the stuff at:

As I too very much want to contribute as much as I can :) This page is
sort of a hub for all sorts of debian related developement(including
the new maintainers guide). I mention it b/c i didn't se it in the
wiki.
