XServer burned my LCD twice

XServer managed to "burn" my laptop's LCD twice. In all the years that
I've been using linux I never had this happen to any of my monitors.
Since I just fixed the LCD for the third time, I'm worried to plug the
external monitor that is causing my laptop's screen to "burn". Any
advice on protecting my laptop's lcd while still using my external
LCD.
