Getting totem to play divx / xvid

As a help to beginners with this problem I offer the following:

If you have the default installation, you will have to change your
sources.list file to allow you to install other packages.

The quick steps are:
  
- edit /etc/apt/sources.list
- uncomment the two lines to allow 'universe' access
- Update your local database with the 'apt-get update' command
- Install the package(s) as above
