Very slow CD ripping with sound-juicer

Heya!

I discovered a problem with my new Hoary install..

I started ripping a CD in sound juicer and came back an hour later to
find that it wasn't finished yet!  Turns out it's ripping at 0.7x and
it's not even finished yet.  I tried stopping it, turning on dma on
the drive using hdparm, but that had no effect.  fuser /dev/hdc shows
that no other process is trying to access the drive and there are no
visible scratches on the disc.. I've also tried other CDs, they had
the same problem.

A little guidance please?
