further Hoary+ nvidia issues

I have been attempting to get my Hoary install working with an old
Riva TNT card without succes (had a previous post about running
installer from nvidia site). I have installed the packages nvidia-glx
and nvidia-settings. I have followed instructions to manually modify
the xorg.conf:
- commented out references to "DRI"
- ensured nvidia module was being loaded
- ensure "nvidia" was specified instead of "nv"
I followed the instructions in the file to enable this customised file
to be automatically updated. I then ran:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and followed through all prompts to select nvidia and monitor details etc.
The system hangs on boot when it gets to the nvidia splash screen.
Previously (i.e. before I did this setup process) it did the same if I
used the "nvidia" drivers instead of "nv". The only difference is that
now the nvidia splash screen is in a higher resolution mode.
I have done extensive searching on this subject and am struggling to
get answers. Anyone got any wisdom to offer? Will copy xorg.conf to
here if that helps.
Regards,
Sam
