On-board sound versus dedicated/standalone sound card ???

You possibly know this page: www.alsa-project.org where you can check
sound card compatibility.

Beware however of the new SB Audigy LS and SB Live 7.1 cards. They
don't use the emu10k1 chip anymore and latest alsa has limited support
for them.

I recommend you the classic SB Live 4.1 or 5.1 or an older SB Audigy
(which I have too).
