Recovering a damaged ext3 system, where to start?

In the beginning I actually gave many no-awnsers after carefull
consideration (as if I would have understood something about the
questions :) Then I started to feel stupid doing so and started to keep
down the enter button just to get the whole thing over. I was complitely
convinced that my system is not going to recover and me trying to use
fsck is a joke. I couldn't believe my eyes when the system booted up as
normal.
