Not sure if this will help but in vnc I believe the server must be a
new incarnation so trying to boot into :0 and viewing :0 over vnc is
impossible. There are however other versions of vnc that do this very
thing for you. rfb and x11vnc both use :0 but their output isn't very
nice from what I remember.
The other option is to change around your init scripts so that even
when you boot into your computer at home it's through a vnc session
(which you can connect to from wherever) Prettiest method but not the
easiest :)
