[Hoary] difference between vncserver and remote desktop?

Hi all,

Next item on my to-do list for getting Hoary to work is VNC.

Everything was working fine under Warty. When I upgraded to Hoary,
remote desktop (i.e., I'm logged into the other computer and
controlling what's on the screen remotely) works fine.

What doesn't work is anything other than :0. For example, what I
normally do is ssh into the Ubuntu PC, type vncserver at the shell
prompt and then log into the machine remotely using servername:1.
Everything appears to work OK until I try to type. Then, instead of,
say, `This is a test.' I get `n87b70ndo037nd'

Anyone have any ideas where to look? There are no messages that I can
see in ~/.xsession_errors. I've tried changing the keyboard settings,
but it doesn't have any effect (I get the exact same garbage
characters).
