Sounds like it is probably a bug, check https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/

Anybody else with similar experiences?

Also, a google search had something similar
i used the terms: linux ls hangs fat drive

and the first post is regarding a vfat partition

google searching for problems like this is an
art though, so once you can narrow down the
problem more you may be able to fix better
results.

Any other suggestions from the list?

If it is not a known bug, one should be filed.
