gnome display manager fails to start at boot

Today I discovered that GDM does not start at boot.
I get thrown back to a console screen to login.

This happened completely out of the blue on a perfectly working
system. The only 'new' things I did yesterday were installing
the 'speedtouch' package and it's dependency 'libatm1'.
(just to look not to use).

Anybody ever experience something like this.
