nautilus horribly slow with large files

I just clicked on a 500Meg file in nautilus, right-clicked, and selected
properties. Nautilus hung for a couple of minutes, and then finally
opened the properties tab. 

What did it do, read the entire file first??

If I do this on a small file it pops-up right away, so it seems that
something horribly inefficient is taking place here.
