laptop - any suggestions for a friend of mine?

I agree with Vram,  I haven't found anything that touches the quality
of the Thinkpad.  T42 is especially light & powerful.  Just don't
touch the keyboard during a resume-from-ram (there's a keyboard driver
bug that will be fixed with the next kernel that makes lots of keys
randomly repeat if you do hit a key before it's fully resumed.  Other
than that it's just about perfect.)
