Live cds are much slower than a proper install for a number of  
reasons; speed of cd drive access as compared to hd, having to  
uncompress on the fly (I think).

I have a standard Ubuntu desktop running fine on 500mhz / 128mb  
machine, and the repositories offer plenty of lighter apps/desktops,  
such as Abiword and XFCE.
