With regard to the live CDs md5sum them and if right and burn again
telling the applicaiton that it is a bootable CD.
With regard to broken Hoary CDs I got several broken ones recently
(in fact I have yet to get a fully working one but it is possible even
with this to survive and install.
(A) start install but choose at the very first chance the word [server]
as the type of install.
when this is done
(B) then remove the CD from apt repositries
this involves editing /etc/apt/sources.list the command you could use is
    sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
put a '#' in front of the first line.
(C) run the command
    apt-get update
(D) run the command
    apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
(E) add other packages
(F) repeat (E) until you have all the packages you want
(G) enjoy your new Ubuntu system
