The difference between Debian and Ubuntu?

Hi all,
I understand that Ubuntu is based on Debian, 
and a friend of mine have been experimenting by using Debian repositories on 
his ubuntu. Actually, what is the difference between Debian and Ubuntu? Seems 
like very similar, because, in Mandrake, I can't use RH/FC 
repositories/packages.
