686 kernel Works, doesn't work with my network device

I recently used synaptic to install the 686 version of the kernel on Hoary.

It works in general (and seems faster than the 386) but my system
complains that my wireless network device ath0 (atheros chipset)
doesn't exist.

I would think that a 386-compiled atheros driver would work with the
686 kernel... but it doesn't seem to.

How can I get everything working with the 686 kernel?

Thanks,
