Laptop without a network connection

I haven't extensively tested either of these, but what I'm trying on
my laptop is this:
in /etc/network/interfaces
look for auto eth0 and comment it out... that way you can do a ifup
eth0 when you do have a network cable installed, and it shouldn't come
up at boot time.
and in /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
uncomment the line that starts timeout 60;
and change it to timeout 5; (20 is probably safer)
