Best filesystem for an external/portable harddrive?

I'm curious what y'all think about filesystems for external hard drives.
I want to be able to use it on any linux computer (which might have
varying /etc/passwd contents).

It seems like vfat is the best way to go, but since I only really care
about linux support, I figure there should be some other reasonable
option, but I can't come up with it.

curiously,
mike
