I should probably duck in here and say that what I got my father to do
was to log in on a console, stop gdm, run dpkg-reconfigure -pcritical
xserver-xorg and then restart gdm.

It'd be really cool if we could have something which on-boot noticed
that the graphics hardware had changed and reconfigured X for us.
