No, you should see the answer immediately.

Maybe your irda-utils are really not startet.
Run '/etc/init.d/irda-utils start' in a terminal and see what it says.
(If it says: 'Starting IrDA service: irattach.' Then you have to set the
following the irattach option in your /etc/defaults/irda_utils to true:

# Set this to 'false' if you do not need to start irattach. Otherwise
set it
# to 'true'.
ENABLE="true"
