Okay,

I installed manually again and it worked; in the following order:
1. sudo -H firefox
2. Install mozilla myspell dictionary from
http://dictionaries.mozdev.org/installation.html
3. Downloaded spellbound_lib_linux_1.0.2.xpi and saved in a folder.
http://exchangecode.com/spellbound/downloads/spellbound_lib_linux_1.0.2.xpi
4. unzip spellbound_lib_linux_1.0.2.xpi
5. cd bin
6. sudo cp * /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/components/
7. start firefox as normal user.
8. Go to http://spellbound.sourceforge.net/download and
install the Spellbound extension.
http://exchangecode.com/spellbound/downloads/spellbound_0.7.3.xpi

Works now. Not sure if the order is what solved it or not.
