I would guess your .Xauthority file is not owned by you anymore, but
by root.  For example, mine on my machine is owned by my username:

$ ls -l /home/daniel/.Xauthority
-rw-------  1 daniel daniel 215 2005-05-31 20:13 /home/daniel/.Xauthority
