Well, I found this:

which suggests that sys_auth_module (or mod_auth_sys) is one
way of doing this. Though I'm a little wary, because few
people seem to have discussed it, and in particular the
phrase 'mod_auth_sys' appears nowhere on apache.org.

Does anyone have experience with this module?
