help on installing packages on ubuntu

Take a look in synapic (System->Administration->Synaptic Package
Manager) see <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AddingRepositoriesHowto?highlight=
%28repositories%29> on how to use universe and multiverse.

latex is provided by the tetex distribution but only tetex-2 is in the
ubuntu repositories. tetex-3 is MUCH better...

xfig is in universe

I couldn't find xdvi though, use pdflatex instead.
