gnome-panel crashing on hoary

no
  i only restarted gnome
but indeed logging out would have been better :)

when i remove '.gconf/apps/panel' and log back in
everything is fine for a minute and then those applets start crashing again
so i am not going to bother anymore

  , the only thing i really would like to know is
    how to empty trash without the trash icon ?
    is there a console command to trash the trash ?
