You may have to do:

  apt-get install menu

and then

  update-menu  (or maybe update-menus)

Might have to login again afterwards to see the updated menus.

p.s.: if you can tolerate a LONG compile time, you might want to get the 
source for k3b 5.x (soon to be k3b 6.0), and build it manually.  It's MUCH 
improved, with an all-new interface much like that of 3DSMax and Maya.  It's 
one of those apps I'm really looking forward to.  Even version 4.x does have 
some unique features, though.
