Hi Paul, output from terminal is as follows,

squareyes at here:~$ ls -l dev/lp0
ls: dev/lp0: No such file or directory
squareyes at here:~$ cd /dev/
squareyes at here:/dev$ sudo MAKEDEV lp0
/sbin/MAKEDEV: don't know how to make device "lp0"

Had a look at man MAKEDEV didn't enlighten me at all.
So it could be a hardware problem, which I find hard to understand,
as I used to have Win98 on the same drive , and the Epson LQ 500
worked fine from there.

A big smile comes to face, :-) am in my 60's and just the thought of
my writing
this myself would be enough to get me committed :-) Brain no longer
remembers
things like it used to, don't think I have enough time left (am
currently working on 25 years) :-)
I was thinking of taking up a collection and paying someone to do the job.
As I mentioned, problem has been the same with more than one computer,
have tried along with a couple of Deb guru's who have had no success
either.
Thanks again for the help, biggest problem I have is I am so far away
from any other Linux user.
Take Care
Winton
