Just to update, my original subject is a little misleading. pmount
actually works, it's just that when I plug my camera in, gthumb
doesn't prompt me to upload photos, and I don't' get the disk icon on
the desktop. My camera is listed when I do a lsusb and when I do lshal
as root, so that stuff is working. Maybe it's gnome-volume-manager?

Then again, maybe this has something to do with NIS. I've recently
started using NIS for user info and authentication. My server is a
Centos 4.1 box, and the groups on Centos do not match up with the
groups on Ubuntu, so I add users to the
video,audio,plugdev,cdrom,floppy groups in /etc/security/group.conf
file. But, as you can see, I have myself in the plugdev group.
Furthermore, I have root set up on this machine and root doesn't get
the gthumb prompt either.
