[Breezy] New install gnome freeze during splash

I just recently installed Breezy Colony 2 onto a new HP zv6131us
Pavilion Notebook.

I started off with Hoary. Seemed to install okay, but login to gnome
crashed. I thought it might be something fixed in Breezy.

I then did a fresh install of Breezy. X was broken. I then installed the
xorg-driver-fglrx and xserver-xorg-driver-ati. X then started to work
but /etc/X11/X was not an application (or whatever the error was).

I then deleted the X symlink and created a new to the right location.

X then worked. I got the gdm login screen.
I logged in.

Everything looked right, and sounded right.
Then while the splash screen was up and the sound was sounding before
any icons appeared on the splash screen, the screen froze and the sound
was in an endless loop.

Any help to get this going greatly appreciated.
