GTK defines itself by it's freedom more than Qt does. Qt is distributed
with multiple licences, one of which is the GPL. That in itself, is not
really in the spirit of free software because that is saying "it is free
if that is what is convenient for you".
Sure, the GPL is a licence between the author and potential
contributers to the code, but it also represents ideals (as well as
practical advantages) to the end users, regardless of whether they each
actually unpack and look at the source.
Some have felt that dual or multiple licencing like this makes Qt
non-free. There have been more than a few debates over this.
