Gnome freezes after session start

Thanks Andrew & Dennis, I'll take a look at removing cache and these
files in the evening.

However, I now found out that it does not freeze completely, but just
stalls for a few minutes. After a while, the screensaver comes up (4
minutes of no activity), and then later, there's a desktop sitting in
front of me. So, my guess is, there must be some boot process taking a
lot of time to start. But how can I find out which process that would
be? /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything strange (I think).
