Different strokes for different folks.  I know there's 3rd party
replacements for Windows (I see you're using outlook).

Yes, however KDE apps won't look native to the rest of the GNOME desktop
AFAIK. And vica versa.

I haven't used Kubuntu, but AFAIK its pretty much the same (same
repositories and all) just one comes with GNOME preinstalled and the
other KDE.

Try them out!  I believe ubuntu has a kubuntu live CD, if not, download
knoppix and try it out.  Then try out an ubuntu live CD with GNOME.
There's others you may want to try out, all depending on taste (gluxbox,
icewm, xfce, etc, etc).
