vserver? is that a simple chroot? or a xen or uml ? also, i can't really
support a custom kernel.. i have no idea how it has been compiled or so.
Also note that if you are running in a chroot, it's the master kernel
that needs to have the module loaded and /proc needs to be mounted
in the chroot for tools like lsmod to work.

there are too many enviromental vars that can affect that problem.

Also, you might want to try asking in ubuntu-user mailing list. I am not always
around and other people might have experienced the same problem as you.
