Most payments are voluntary in one sense or another. We all could live in
tipis, if we didn't want to pay for houses.

Agreed, but I would say "Free Software", not open source there.

You're a GNOME user, aren't you? ;) I'm using KDE on an iBook precisely
because it's a much better desktop than either Windows or OS X.

"Desktop Linux" is already here, and almost ideal for me. As for when it
becomes popular enough to replace or seriously compete with windows... I
don't care. If/when people understand Free Software, they'll prefer it.
Until then, I'd prefer that they stay away. That way, their mainstream
interests in proprietary software and poor–to–non-existent but easy
"security" won't bring down the movement before it's well-established.
