Shelling out for Command Line Stuff

Applications -> System Tools -> Terminal

from within GNOME.

You ought to consult a frequently-asked questions list.
Others have pointed you to beginner Ubuntu resources, I
believe. You might find them helpful. We'd be glad to help,
but we also get lots of questions that have surely been
answered elsewhere.
