could just be some missing codecs like  libdvdcss2 for dvd.  whenever i
like a machine to be a multimedia heaven i always make sure i have these
stuff:

i never had any problems with playing dvd. before my mplayer freezes but
that was because i did not have the codec to play it or the file has
some problems.
