An extended partition may be seen as a container for logical
partitions. For your disk partition 5 to 8 are logical ones.

As you can see partition 4 starts at 51200 and ends at 102108.
It spans from start of partition 5 (51200) to the end of partition 8
(102108).

- So there are three basic types of partitions,
  · primary partitions,
  · extended partitions
  · and logical partitions.

- Only primary and logical partitions are mountable.
- An extended partition is only a container for logical partitions.

Tip:
You may play a bit partitioning a floppy disk (/dev/fd0).
Its of no practical use but a god way to win knowledge whithout
 having a free hard disk.

The Linux Partition HowTo is a documentation I would suggest as a
starting point:
 http://www.lissot.net/partition/
 http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Partition/ (official but outdated)
But there is at least one very ugly mistake in this Dokumentation.
I added a fixed chapter in the attachment, it will need a while
'till this will be fixed in the original version...

regards,
Thomas
