Good call ;)

For KDE, you want the 'kubuntu' install CDs.  Very much the same distro, but 
just with different install defaults.

If you need to do it manually, you can just (afaik!) install 
'kubuntu-desktop', and then remove all of the gnome files (though you may 
want to keep synaptic, too; kynaptic is poor by comparison.
