Pointer flickers are a result of software cursors.  If your X driver has a 
hardware cursor option, it may solve that for you in a nice way.

But there is also a program, 'unclutter', which will hide the mouse after a 
certain period without mouse use (or when you begin typing, iirc).

Just to help you use your ubuntu system better: you can find this sort of 
information by just searching in synaptic (or kynaptic, or by using 
'apt-cache search').  I'd also recommend taking the time to get to know 
packages available, and when you reload or update the package lists, taking 
time to read the 'new' packages list.  That way, you'll always be informed of 
new possibilities, should you need them in future.
