burning data DVD with Graveman

AS I had received no answer to my question I chose to do a 'Full blank'
thinking that this would be the best.  I then tried to burn a file and
received an error message 'Operation failed'. I opened the DVD and was
surprised to find a file there which I had burned before 'Full blank'.
Surely this file should have been deleted by the formatting process?
What next please?
