 It's nothing to do with the machine.
 What OS is the "other" machine using?
 On my machine using hoary+kde3.4 using control centre/kde
 components/component chooser I am able to switch between one browser and
 another without difficulty.  What version of KDE are you using?

Thank you Brian. I had it set up in Control Center/KDE Component/File 
Associates but NOT in Component Chooser.
